What is EFT? - Emotional Freedom Techniques

Emotional Freedom Techniques

Emotional freedom technique is (EFT) is a fusion of the old and new, bringing together ideas from Eastern and Western philosophies. It combines principles from other healing modalities and provides a powerful way of working to release old limiting behavioral patterns.

EFTs concept was developed in America in the 1990s by Gary Craig it has roots in acupuncture, kinesiology and psychology. It is a modern meridian-based energy therapy which uses tapping to free negative emotional energy held in the body.

EFT is based on a new discovery that has provided thousand with relief from pain, disease and emotional issues. It is underpinned by the ‘EFT Discovery Statement’ which says….”the cause of all negative emotions is a disruption in the body’s energy system…Our unresolved negative emotions are major contributors to most physical pains and diseases. “ Adverse life experiences affect how we feel physically, mentally and emotionally. Responses to these experiences can be stored as energy that feels ‘wrong’ or uncomfortable. The aim of EFT is to release this uncomfortable energy and set you free.

Simply stated EFT is like an emotional version of acupuncture except needles aren’t necessary. EFT is now spreading very rapidly in the US and in the UK.

How does it help?
Emotional freedom technique can be used to treat physical and emotional symptoms. Principally it is used to release negative emotions and eliminate cravings. It can literally ‘melt away’ emotions in a matter of minutes. EFT can help with stopping smoking, weight issues, childhood issues, trauma, bereavement, anxiety, anger, depression, phobias and PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). It can assist with the management of pain associated with conditions such as MS, ME, Arthritis and chronic back problems. It can help to alleviate physical symptoms connected with stress such as IBS, psoriasis, eczema and allergies. Confidence issues, work performance issues and personal motivation can be worked with. Insomnia, stuttering, exam stress and many other conditions can be addressed with EFT. Following and EFT session the dispelled feelings may not return at all. If they do, they may be less intense and the sequence set up in the session should be repeated. You will still retain the memory of the event you were working on but it will no longer have the emotional charge that it had before.

There may be more than one emotion that needs to be cleared. There might be anger attached to a situation but there could also be other emotions involved such as guilt or sadness. All of these can be addresses separately and often when you start to disperse one emotion the intensity of others can start reducing straight away. You can use the basic principles of EFT to work with anything that presents in your life, for the rest of your life. Sometimes you will have your benefits in a few minutes. Once you have been taught the technique you can work successfully on your own with many issues. If you need any further assistance please come back for another session.

How does it work?
EFT has a common sense approach it is based on ancient discoveries that have been around for over 5,000 years and more recently on the work of modern day scientists such as Albert Einstein who told us back in the 1920s that everything (including our bodies) is composed of energy. It is because of this that the mind, body and emotions are all so closely related.

The contention of EFT is that in order to remove the negative responses, tackling the negative experience through the mental aspect alone is not enough because doing so cannot correct the energy imbalance in the physical body, rather, the energy imbalance must be restored in the physical body, at the same time as releasing the negative emotions. The theory of EFT holds that negative emotions are built in the following stages: a negative experience occurs: negative emotions are felt in t response to this, leading to inappropriate programming inside the body; the body’s energy system gets disrupted due to these negative emotions.

Well established energy meridian points on the body are stimulated by tapping on them. Tapping these acupuncture points, repeating affirmations and using Neuro-muscular reprogramming all contribute to the release of stored negative patterns. This helps to rebalance emotional energy stored in the meridian system and the body’s tissues.
